Welcome to the 2023 Nero’s Law Didactic Training

Every year, all over the world, Police dogs, also referred to as Police K9s or just K9s, are injured or killed in the course of performing their duties

Nero’s Law came as the result of tragic events that unfolded on April 2018 when Yarmouth Police Sergeant Sean Gannon and his K9 partner Nero were both shot in the line of duty. Sergeant Gannon did not survive. Nero suffered life-threatening injuries but was unable to be treated by emergency medical personnel due to existing state law that prohibited animals from being treated or transported by emergency personnel.

Nero’s Law was signed in 2022 and requires Massachusetts EMS Providers to receive both didactic and practical training unless the ambulance service has obtained from a waiver from DPH/OEMS for responding to police dog emergencies.

This course will provide you with the required didactic training portion and prepare you for the the practical session.

This course is available to all members of CAPE COD EMS at no charge. To access the course, login to your account and click on the “Courses” link on the left. You will then see the link for the course. Simply click on the link, enroll yourself, and enjoy taking the course at your own pace.
